Morale & Difficulty Settings
The message from you, the community was loud and clear. As a result in Medieval II: Total War, the difficulty settings will only affect unit morale, fatigue and AI. As the difficulty ramps up, the influence of morale and fatigue become more apparent with the “Very Hard” setting giving you the most realistic battle experience possible. In addition we have included AI mechanics that will give the AI a faster and far more intelligent feel. Best of luck to anyone that can beat the AI on the “Very hard” setting with a full 20 unit army. My advice is: if you are new to Total War and want to just get to grips with the controls start on the “Easy” setting, if you’re a veteran of Total War games opt for “Hard” or “Very Hard”. Best of all I am confident that “Very Hard” will ensure M2TW is going to sit in your PC for a long, long time, I can’t see even the best Total War Players winning on “Very Hard” without more troops.

Fatigue was a tricky aspect of the game to get right. Some players like the freedom of more movement while others like dealing with another mechanic that allow the battles to be more tactical and realistic. In the end we decided to give you the lot. On “Easy” difficulty, fatigue will have a minimal influence whilst on “Medium” and “Hard” it plays a more significant role. On the “Very Hard” setting meanwhile it’s as close to real life as possible. Overall the fatigue system is very smooth; it drops uniformly and recovers at a slow enough rate to ensure that your troops are getting more tired as the battle progresses.

Morale was the area that was given the most attention and rightly so. In my opinion it makes or breaks the battle experience. We wanted to avoid mass chain routing as soon as melee troops engage. We also wanted to ensure that if you want to keep the units broken you must chase with a significant force or they will recover and fight back. Right now, during a large infantry engagement, you will be lucky to see any unit’s rout in the first 30 seconds and if it does happen, the rest of the army if they’re elite units, will stay and fight. Best of all, units that do rout will recover within 150m unless chased off the battlefield, so you can quickly throw them back into the melee.

So overall, the difficulty will ensure you can have a game that is as complicated as you feel comfortable with. The new morale and fatigue system with nice combat speeds and larger unit sizes will ensure the game is smooth and ensures success is not determined by mere chance but by better tactics.

In the last few days the Quality Assurance department have been playing LAN games and many campaign players are now addicted to multiplayer. There was a knockout tournament run over the weekend and the final was a real close affair between Simon and Will D. Simon came out on top with 100 extra kills, was very close and I swear they still had the shakes for a good 10 minutes afterwards.
